In 2026, Ukrzaliznytsia contracted for 102 new passenger cars, marking a record volume of orders for the renewal of its passenger rolling stock. The need to modernize the fleet is growing due to natural wear and tear on the cars and regular Russian attacks on railway infrastructure. This was reported by the Ministry of Recovery, Infrastructure, and Transport of Ukraine.
The company signed another contract with a Ukrainian manufacturer — the Kryukiv Carriage Works. It provides for the delivery of an additional 10 new-generation passenger cars by the end of 2029. Previously, Ukrzaliznytsia had contracted for 92 new Ukrainian-made cars, scheduled for delivery in 2027–2028.
The new cars must meet modern safety, comfort, and energy-efficiency requirements. Their service life will be 20 years longer, and extended intervals between overhauls are expected to reduce the need for maintenance. Of the ten cars under the new contract, two will be adapted to transport passengers who use wheelchairs.
The rolling stock renewal also supports Ukrainian industry. Over 100 Ukrainian companies are involved in the production of the new-generation railcars, supplying components and equipment.
In total, since 2021, as part of the state funding program, Ukrzaliznytsia has contracted for 368 passenger railcars. The gradual renewal of the fleet is intended to replace outdated rolling stock and improve the safety and comfort of passenger travel.
