Ukrainian books may become up to 20% more expensive due to publishers’ losses from shelling

At least 30 Ukrainian publishing houses and bookstores suffered losses as a result of Russian attacks in August 2026. Damage to warehouses and the destruction of book shipments are forcing market participants to rethink their logistics, reduce print runs, and plan the release of new titles more cautiously.

One of the largest attacks was the strike on August 28 against a “Nova Poshta” warehouse in Sviatopetrivskyi, Kyiv Oblast, where products from dozens of publishers and bookstores were stored. Among those affected are “Ranok,” “Nash Format,” Vivat, “Vydavnytstvo Staroho Leva,” “A-BA-BA-HA-LA-MA-HA,” “Knyholav,” “Laboratoriya,” Book.ua, and Readeat.

The losses of individual companies are already in the millions of hryvnias. Vivat estimates its direct losses at approximately 16.6 million UAH, while “Laboratoriya” estimates its losses at 1–2 million UAH at purchase prices. Readeat reported the loss of over 60,000 books and other goods with a total value of more than 26 million UAH.

Readers may feel the consequences of the Russian attacks directly. According to market participants’ estimates, book prices may rise by up to 20%, and certain popular titles may periodically disappear from store shelves due to the need to reprint destroyed print runs.

Publishers are also forced to reduce the print runs of certain titles and diversify their storage locations to avoid concentrating large inventories in a single place. This may increase logistics and production costs and affect the release dates of new titles and reprints.

Despite these losses, the Ukrainian book market continues to operate and is adapting its business models to security risks. At the same time, attacks on warehouses, printing plants, and logistics infrastructure are putting additional pressure on book production costs and the availability of titles.
