AI Saves Up to 90% of the Time Spent Searching for Enemy Targets — Ministry of Defense

Artificial intelligence already allows analysts with the Ukrainian Defense Forces to save up to 90% of the time spent searching for enemy positions and equipment in photos and videos. The Ministry of Defense is systematically implementing AI solutions to speed up target detection and improve the effectiveness of combat operations.

One of the key areas of focus is shortening the so-called kill chain — that is, the sequence of events from target detection to assessment of the outcome of its destruction. Automatic recognition helps to locate and identify targets more quickly, analyze video streams, and maintain their prioritization.

The Avengers AI platform is already integrated into the DELTA combat system. According to the Ministry of Defense, it is capable of identifying approximately 70% of enemy equipment in real time and analyzes over 100,000 video streams each month.

To develop such technologies, Ukrainian developers have gained access to Avengers Labs — a dataset containing 5 million annotated frames obtained during combat missions. The database contains images of tanks, artillery, air defense systems, infantry, and aerial targets, including reconnaissance UAVs and “suicide drones.”

At the same time, Ukraine adheres to the human-in-the-loop principle: AI helps detect and assess a target, but the final decision on engaging it remains with a human. Requirements for the ethical use of artificial intelligence are also integrated into the Brave1 grant programs.

Thus, artificial intelligence is becoming one of the key elements of the Defense Forces’ technological transformation — from automated intelligence data processing to reducing the time between threat detection and response.
