We continue international cooperation with the Government of Japan: installing modular temporary bridges for rapid restoration of transport links
Japan has provided Ukraine with 720 meters of modular bridge structures to quickly restore transportation links. In 2026, there are plans to install six more temporary bridges, particularly in regions near the front lines.
According to the Reconstruction Agency, last year, in accordance with agreements between the Governments of Japan and Ukraine under the Grant Agreement for the Emergency Recovery Program, with the assistance of the international cooperation agencies JICA and JICS, metal temporary prefabricated bridges were delivered. The total length of the bridge structures is 720 running meters.
The length of the span structure is 20 meters. The modular bridge consists of a roadway made of metal panels that have already been treated with a special coating, a sidewalk, and has railings and barrier fences.
The transferred structures meet modern load requirements and can be used for military logistics and heavy-duty transport. Modular structures ensure uninterrupted traffic flow in full, just like permanent bridges. In addition, such bridges have significant advantages in terms of installation speed compared to the construction of new structures.
In 2025, two such bridges were installed on public roads of national importance in the Ternopil and Dnipropetrovsk regions. Their lengths are 20 and 40 meters, respectively.
In 2026, subject to the security situation, it is planned to install six more temporary bridges of various lengths, from 20 to 80 meters, including for frontline regions.
The rest of the temporary structures remain in storage with the Restoration Services. If necessary, they can be used for the rapid elimination of the consequences of emergencies and, if necessary, the rapid restoration of transport links in communities.
